Stereotypes about Germans
Germany - that's first of all the Oktoberfest, to eat Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut and drink beer, finally Schloß Neuschwanstein as the main attraction.
Once you have been at least one time to Germany you will probably realize, that all the above mentioned "characteristics" of Germany belong to one single part of this country, called Bavaria. You will learn, that German culture is more than sitting in a beer garden in Munich with a huge beer jug in your hand and some strange music in the background. Bavarians are a very specific species in Germany, perhaps like people from the South in the U.S. There are other groups like the Berliners (remember J.F. Kennedy: "Ich bin ein Berliner!") around the capital and the Saxonians in the south east. All these groups are a little proud of themselves, they behave differently and often make jokes about each other.
Anyway, you should not take that too seriously because it isn't meant as bad as it might sound sometimes!
Germans are always on time. If you have an appointment with one of them you can adjust your watch after the appearance time.
This is probably one of the most obvious features that distinguish Germans from Americans. If we don't consider students for a moment, Germans normally will arrive at 9:00:00.0 or half a second earlier at a certain meeting point if they have an appointment for that time. In contrast American visitors often miss trains in Germany because they cannot accept, that they have to be on time at the railway station. They normally start a tour at the time they want because their car doesn't drive without them. If they have an appointment their partners often have to wait for a while and eventually call back after a while to find out what happend. Germans just feel uncomfortable if they are late, so they try to be always on time.
We have to make the distinction between Germans and German students because generally students have a more relaxed attitude. At universities you have a time period called an "academic quarter". This means that you can leave the lecture hall if your professor hasn't shown up 15 minutes past the expected time, or that it is not a real bad thing to be late in a class by less than a quarter of an hour.
Germans are terrible unfriendly, especially in shops and supermarkets. You have to get used to this pushing and pulling to not getting angry every time you enter a crowded store.
We don't know why it is like this, but it's a matter of fact true. Germans use their elbows not only in business to be successful but also in supermarkets and shops to push their way through the crowd. Once Germans spend a longer time in a friendlier environment and come back to Germany they sometimes get really sick of this. Already the cashier in the first shop makes you aware that you are back home.
Anyway, you should keep in mind that Germans are more friendly once they get to know you better.
You should also be aware of the different role of shaking hands and the use of the first names in conversations: Germans use much more frequent their front limbs just to say "Hello" and "Good Bye", whereas they use only first names in conversations if they know each other for a long time. Again it is much more informal among kids and students but quite a serious thing among adults.
Germany has the best Soccer Team of the world, only Brasil or the Italians can take them on.
That was perhaps right at some time, actually it is definitely not true. After winning the soccer world championship in 1990 the team got a new coach and became worse and worse from that time on. We don't want to blame Berti Vogts for that, but the team never got back to it's incredible form in Italy. Some players were replaced, youngsters entered the national team but we still wait for the next breakthrough. It must be possible to win against Bulgaria!
Germans have rules, regulations and laws for everything. Probably there are even rules for how to behave in the rest room or in a coffin.
This is not completely true, even though there are probably more rules and regulations than in America. Maybe this is one of the reasons why we still think about America if we think about freedom. Here you have the freedom to do anything you want, at least that's what it looks like.
However, that is probably not a real German problem, much more terrible is a phenomenon called bureaucracy. Every German has more or less frequent contact with this alien and everybody hates it, but it's just the way life goes in Germany. The so called "water head" of the society is really tremendous: there are thousands and thousands of institutions, bureaus, organisations and offices that need something to do. So they produce a huge pile of paper, forms and directions to keep the society busy and save their jobs. The unemployment rate would probably increase significantly if we simplfied this mechanism
