I'm in Ireland. Here any place are reacheble within day - I not need to pay for a Hotel. Bus ticket price is arround 20-25 evro. In this case I didn't ask about covering travel expences... but only for first trip. All others - yes, employer have to cover my expences or I will not agree (time to time this happen) to go for interview. 
If employer are located in foreign country - in North Ireland eq. England - I will as about coverning of expences at begining. Of course I will not agree to go to another country if employer don't like to cover my expences.
