As an international language I have no problems with English due in the 'Schengen Area' some more than 400 000 inhabitants speak English as their official language 
So the about 126 Million man speaking Deutsch as Amtssprache are a minority in this area only
In the 'European Union' it is quite better, due 13 % speak English as their native language (same as Italiano), 12 % Français and only 18 % Deutsch.
So why to speak such a exotic language as German?
By the way, 1.3 billion people worldwide speak Chinese, more than any other, even in Russia and in EU a lot of them too
