Если люди ходят в католическую, лютерянскую или менонитскую церквь и едят Sauerkraut, то они уже придерживаются определенных традиций и отличаются от других американцев.
Во всяком случае их можно с меньшей натяжкой назвать немцами, чем людей, собранных на оговоренном выше сайте "Знай наших" - евреями.

The 13 Mennonite and Quaker families who in 1683 settled in Germantown, now a part of the City of Philadelphia, came in search of freedom - the freedom to pursue their religious beliefs and the freedom to seek economic betterment for themselves and their children. They found both. I dare say that a great majority of the forebears of the approximately 60 million Americans who today claim German ancestry came in search of these same objectives - personal freedom and economic opportunity...⌠
