The 1990 Census: German-Americans
According to the 1990 Census, the German-Americans are the largest ethnic group in the U.S. with 57,947,374 persons or 23.3% of the U.S. population claiming some form of German ancestry.

Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, President of the Society of German-American Studies, points out that the German category does not include
Germans from other German-speaking states and regions of Europe and the Americas. Hence, to the German statistic the following can be added:
1 Alsatian 16,465
2 Austrian 870,531
3 Luxemburger 49,061
4 Swiss-German 700,000*
5 German-Russian 10,153
6 Pennsylvania German 305,841
* 70% of the total Swiss statistic
These six additional German ethnic groups total 1,952,051. The total combination then of all the seven German ethnic categories is:
German category 57,985,595
Other categories 1,952,051
Total 59,937,646
The results indicate that German-Americans constitute a full one-fourth of the population (Deutsche Welt-U.S.A., July/August 1992).

The German-Americans are the largest self-reported ethnic group in the United States today.
According to the 2000 U.S. census, 47 million Americans are of German ancestry. German-Americans represent 16% of the total US population and 24% of the white non-Hispanic population.
Of the four major U.S. regions, German was the number one reported ancestry in the Midwest, number two in the West, and three in the Northeast and South regions. German was the top reported ancestry is 23 states, and it was one of the top five reported ancestries in every state except Maine and Rhode Island.
German-American presidents
There have been three presidents of the United States of America who were of German ancestry. One was World War II general Dwight Eisenhower (his original family name was Eisenhauer), another was Herbert Hoover (his original family name was Huber) and the other was James Garfield who campaigned in German.

Shifting Identities - statistical data on ethnic identities in the US - Brief Article - Statistical Data Included
When asked their ancestry or ethnic origin, more people than ever before chose "United States" or "America" on their Census 2000 forms. Some 20 million people identify themselves with the United States or America, up 51 percent from 13 million in 1990, according to the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey.
...
Groups listed in the example in a given year often experience an increase in numbers claiming that ancestry. In 1990, for instance, German and Croatian were among the examples accompanying the ancestry question, which asks: What is your ancestry or ethnic origin? The number of Germans appeared to leap from 49 million in 1980 to 58 million in 1990, when it was included in the example, only to fall again in 2000, to 46 million, when it was left out.
However, the numbers don't necessarily reflect real shifts in populations. "It's highly likely many either migrated into the American category or simply didn't answer the question," says Richard Alba, professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Albany, referring to the decline in people claiming English and German roots.
Census Bureau researchers recognize that the examples they use in the question on ancestry affect response, says Angela Brittingham, demographic analyst at the bureau. Beyond rotating some of the prompts, she says, the bureau has no plans to change how the ancestry question is administered.
REAL POPULATION SHIFTS
Italian ancestry was the first example provided on the Census 2000 questionnaire, which may have increased the response rate of those claiming that ancestry.

Nearly 43 million Americans — about 1-in-6 U.S. residents — identified their ancestry as German in the Census 2000. As opposed to first and second-generation Americans, for whom integration and Americanization was of primary interest, more recently third, fourth and later generations have shown an awakening and increasing ethnic consciousness and concern in tracing their family history back to its European origins. Also Germans are becoming increasingly curious about whether they might have relatives across the Atlantic.
