ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT
Overview
Ukraine▓s economy has continued to grow rapidly since 2000. Real GDP for 2003
grew a record 9.4%.10 High world prices for metals, Ukraine▓s main export item,
has ensured a rise in GDP. The domestic market is also undergoing expansion,
indicated by high levels of investment, in particular in construction, growing
turnover in goods, increased buying of long0term goods, and rising demand for
bank loans.
..
The debt share of Ukraine▓s GDP continued to come down, to 29.5% in 2003.
This reduction is largely the result of GDP growing faster than government debt.
New peak payout periods fall in 2003√5 for the principle of the national debt. In
2003, the Government successfully met all its payment obligations.
...
Manufacturing grew 17.7% in January√April 2004, compared to the same period
of 2003. In April, this growth slowed down somewhat, as the production of met0
als and coke slowed slightly≈related, most likely, to a slight downward trend in
world prices≈and the production and distribution of power, water and gas eased
off as the heating season ended.
...
Exports grew faster than imports in January√March 2004 (45.2% vs 39.2%). This
was mostly due to accelerated export activities in ferrous metals, railway engines,
electric machinery, equipment, instruments, and apparatuses. During
January√March, Ukraine imported more fuel resources than anything else:
petroleum and by0products. The balance of trade for commodities was
US $857.2 mn for January√March 2004.
