Ex-German Leader Evacuated in Sri Lanka
December 28, 2004 12:38 PM EST
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - The Sri Lankan air force evacuated former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl on Tuesday from a hotel where he was stranded in the tsunami-ravaged southern part of the country, an official said.
Kohl was on a private vacation and was not injured in Sunday's massive tidal waves, the former prime minister's spokesman Ulrich Pohlmann said from Berlin.
...
"He (Kohl) had gone with a team on holiday down south. He had been stranded and asking for assistance," the air force commander, air force commander Air Marshal Donald Perera, told The Associated Press. "The helicopter went and we managed to bring him back with six others."
Kohl was likely to continue his stay in Sri Lanka, his spokesman said.
"He is fine and has been brought to safety," Pohlmann said. "The way it looks now, he will continue his stay in Sri Lanka."
The German Embassy in Colombo said Kohl has requested privacy.
"I am not allowed to say anything about him. He has requested for complete privacy," German Ambassador Juerjen Weerth said.
