"Removing clay stains from clothes or fabric
Oh dear. You've just discovered a clay stain on your little one's school shirt that somehow missed their art smock? But no need to throw the whole clay-stained shirt in the bin, try these clay stain removal ideas first:
Gently scrape any remaining clay off the fabric with a spoon (be sure to run the spoon down the weave of the fabric - not across).
Mix one cup of white vinegar with three tablespoons of iodised salt in a bowl, stirring continuously. Dip a whole cloth in the vinegar and salt mixture, and place it over the clay stain on the clothing. Leave until the clothing is saturated with the mix.
Then, using the dipped cloth, gently rub the weave of the clay stained fabric, being sure it gets into the stain. Leave for thirty minutes, making sure the vinegar/iodised salt concoction has soaked into the stain before rinsing it with cold water.
Inspect the stained area of the clothing - if the clay stain remains, you may need to repeat this whole treatment two or three times. If the clay stain is no longer visible on the clothing, wash as normal.
Some other methods for removing clay stains include:
For a larger clay stain, try using two or three mixes of the above vinegar/salt combination to remove it.
For light mud/clay stains (from playing outside), brush as much of the mud or clay as possible off the clothing, or run under water before leaving to soak overnight.
If the mud or clay stain is harder to budge, begin by brushing off dried mud or clay again, and then soak in a mixture of 1/4 cup each of ammonia and liquid detergent, before washing in the hottest water possible for the fabric and using the appropriate bleach (check the label for washing instructions).
Don't use the dryer to dry stained clothing. The heat may set the clay stain."
