∙ There were 76,159 reported traffic crashes involving 138,904 drivers.
∙ 43,188 persons were killed or injured in 28,345 crashes.
∙ 667 fatal crashes claimed the lives of 777 people.
∙ Of the 777 fatalities, 489 were drivers, 232 were passengers, 50 were pedestrians,
and 6 were pedal cyclists.
∙ 53.4 percent of drivers in all crashes were male and 71.8 percent of drivers in all fatal crashes were male.
∙ 48.7 percent of licensed drivers were male.
∙ The number of traffic deaths increased 15.6 percent from 2003 to 2004, and the number of fatal crashes increased 11.9 percent.
∙ 21.6 percent of fatal crashes were alcohol-related.
∙ 69.7 percent of fatal crashes occurred in rural areas.
∙ 54 percent of fatal crashes involved one vehicle and 40.9 percent involved two vehicles.
Of the 600 fatalities in passenger vehicles/pickup trucks, 55 percent were not using safety equipment, and 43 percent of these fatalities were also ejected from the vehicle.>
