<We were driving southbound on the left lane of the I-35 towards Oklahoma City on a very sunny day. Our speed was set with the cruise control of the car to exactly 70 mph, indicated by the speedometer, which has a normal error margin that every car has. That▓s why I guess that our real speed was around 60 √ 65 mph. In front of us was no car at the time that we noticed - after a downhill curve - a very heavy, thick smoke cloud so high that we couldn▓t see the edge of the uphill, coming from a grassfire alongside the right side of our lane. There was no warning sign, no emergency vehicle - either with the rooftop lights on or not - visible, no siren, no person with a flag or warning movement, no indication whatsoever that any kind of emergency operation or road obstruction was there.
I was the driver of the car Ford Taurus GL, license plate MFO 928. Immediately after passing the bend I reacted to the very low visibility due to heavy smoke some meters in front and started to brake. At the moment of approaching to the smoke my speed was about 30 mph but I couldn▓t do a full stop because the distance between the bend and smoke cloud wouldn▓t allow me technically to do that.
I continued braking when we went into the smoke cloud; visibility there was very low, I could hardly see 2-3 meters in front of us. Then suddenly a huge truck appeared right in front of me, but I couldn▓t see either color or precise shape of this car, it appeared to me like a big shadow due to low visibility. I tried to do the full stop and in a very last moment I managed to turn the steering wheel to the left and as a consequence we avoided the frontal impact and even the more dangerous situation because the SUV driving behind us couldn▓t see both cars as well. We could be sandwiched between two cars. Even if I managed to reduce my speed to 15 mph before entering the smoke cloud my overall stopping distance was 10.37 Meters (34.02 feet) technically calculated.
The truck we hit was a very old solid steel car. We hit a rear part of it where all the water hoses are located. This steel part damaged the ⌠A■ and ⌠B■ columns of our car braking up the both side windows and causing multiple glass cuttings to the passengers.
After the accident we were standing on the left line of the highway for approximately 2 seconds with our warning lights and braking lights on. I turned my head and saw a SUV right behind our car, the driver obviously couldn▓t see our car due to heavy smoke and avoided collision only by pulling to the ditch on the left side. In a couple of seconds I managed to pull the car to the grass on the left side because the situation on the road was totally dangerous due to smoke. In was very windy on the 5th of November but my husband took some pictures 3 minute after the accident and the thick smoke was still present.
The accident was perfectly avoidable, if the truck driver would have gone only ten meters forward, to cross the highway BEFORE the smoke, or if there was any warning or officer slowing down traffic. It is the only possible to yield to an emergency vehicle, if one can see it, like in the good weather conditions that were prevailing on the day. Furthermore, nobody √ emergency driver or not √ can be irresponsible while driving such a massive truck! The grass fire could cost lives of five people. The truck driver was obviously ignoring every possible safety measure necessary to avoid a collision.>
