Q: Is NATO involved in Afghanistan?
A: Yes. Through its leadership of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), NATO is helping establish the conditions in which Afghanistan can enjoy a representative government and self-sustaining peace and security.
NATO took over command and coordination of ISAF in August 2003. This is the first mission outside the Euro-Atlantic area in NATO▓s history. Initially restricted to providing security in and around Kabul, the Alliance is now in the process of expanding the mission to cover other parts of the country.

Key tasks
As part of its task of contributing to a secure
environment, ISAF routinely conducts
joint patrols with the Kabul City
Police and the Afghan National Army,
projecting a positive image of teamwork
and partnership. ISAF also supports
security sector reform and the disarmament,
demobilisation and reintegration
process. This includes helping to train
and develop the new Afghan National
Army and the national police, as well
as to demobilise former militia combatants.
..
Another key task is to support the
Afghan authorities in the overall operation
of the Kabul Afghan International
Airport, which is a vital lifeline into and
out of Afghanistan because the country
is very diffi cult to access by road.
Expanded
mission
..
ISAF plans to take control of fi ve new
PRTs by the time of NATO▓s summit
meeting in Istanbul at the end of
June 2004.
