Yuri Gagarin's motherland celebrates the 70th anniversary of the planet's first space astronaut. The anniversary falls on March 9th. A large group of pilots and astronauts headed by the legendary Alexei Leonov, several delegates from the State Duma as well as famous actors and actresses were all invited to participate in the festivities in Gagarin's memory. They laid flowers on a grave of the parents of the famous astronaut.
Young space pilots from the Training Center arrived to the village Klushino, where their idol Yuri Alexeevich had been born. According to the space tradition, a young astronaut has to drink from the famous Gagarin's well (a special initiation ceremony) before he gets "accepted" by the space brotherhood.
Other guests from Moscow and from the so-called Star city (training grounds for future space pilots) teach Gagarin's classes to Russian students in numerous schools across the capital. They also organize interesting meetings and exhibitions in museums, reports ITAR-TASS.
A meeting dedicated to the memory of the first space explorer Yuri Gagarin has taken place by the Gagarin's monument on Red Square at 11:00 am MSK. Later, at 12:00 pm MSK, Moscow"s museum of first man in space has officially established the "Veteran Baikonur" club. Festivities are also scheduled to begin at 16:00 pm MSK at the "Komsomolets" auditorium. The festivities will include Gagarin"s scientific lectures, reading of which will last for four days.
Yuri Gagarin's biography and his first flight to space
He finished 7 classes, a preparatory college in Moscow's Lubertsi as well as a school for working youth. Afterwards he got accepted to an industrial college. His education was a typical one for a typical village fellow. Back then, every Soviet boy dreamed about one day becoming a space pilot. Majority of Gagarin's friends applied to various flying schools. Gagarin was no exception.
However, the Saratov's Air club turned Yuri down at first due to the applicant's height (only 165 cm). Eventually, he got in. The air club turned out to be a launching pad for his future career. In the course of his training flights, Yuri had to seat on a special cushion. It is only with this cushion that he was able to see the landing ground. Soon afterwards, Gagarin was drafted; then studied in one of the military aviation facilities, which he finished with> honors in 1957.
A year later, having married, Yuri fled north where he continued serving in North Fleet Aviation. He was then enrolled in the first group of astronauts. There was a total of 20 of them. The only thing these several "star rangers" had in common was their short posture, which in fact was perfect for a relatively small size of a pilot's cabin.
When Gagarin was launched in space, Soviet media composed three statements to be broadcasted live. The first one-triumphant, was meant to be broadcasted in case of a successful mission. The second one was meant to inform viewers of some failure. The final third announcement, informed of a tragic death of the astronaut.
On April 16, 1961, Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin has made the first space flight in the history of mankind on his space shuttle "Vostok". It took him 1hr and 48 min to fly around the globe and successfully land in Saratov region.
The entire world fell in love with him within minutes after the news spread around the world and people were able to see the great man's picture. At 26, Yuri Gagarin became the world"s best known individual-Columbus of Space, Son of Earth, Citizen of the Universe. Afterwards, there were tears of happiness, meetings with high rank officials, talks with Khrushchev himself, numerous awards.
Despite the fact that the major portion of his time was occupied by public appearances, speeches, Gagarin continued to grow as a space pilot. He dreamed of the second flight, more challenging and a lengthy one. Authorities, on the other hand, wanted to "preserve" the legendary pilot. Eventually, Gagarin managed to get enrolled into a team of the first experimental space station. Training was severe. Unfortunately, his dream was not meant to become reality. On March 27, 1968 Gagarin tragically died while conducting his training flight on airplane MiG-15 along with pilot Seregin.
Actual reasons of Yuri Gagarin"s death remain unclear up until these days. There were versions of the crash. However none of them proved to be true in the end. Rumor has it that it was all due to the second pilot Seregin"s poor health that resulted in the fatal crash. He had some sort of a heart condition, which might have imparted his ability to pilot the plane. He might have lost his conscious and Gagarin was simply unable to maneuver the machine by himself. He could have catapulted and save his life, but Gagarin preferred to fight till the end. He died young, but remained in peoples" memories as a true hero!

Yuri Gagarin : First Man in Space > new window
April 12, 1959 : Soviet cosmonaut who became the first human to travel in space. The son of a carpenter, Gagarin grew up on a collective farm in Saratov (later renamed Gagarin City), west of Moscow. After graduating with honors from the Soviet Air Force in 1957, he was selected as one of 20 fighter pilots to begin cosmonaut training. Immediately before his historic flight, the 27-year-old was promoted from senior lieutenant to major. The flight itself aboard Vostok 1, took place on April 12, 1959, lasted 108 minutes, and concluded with Gagarin ejecting from his capsule after reentry and descending by parachute to the ground near the village of Uzmoriye on the Volga. In his orange flight-suit he approached a woman and a little girl with a calf, who began to run away (it was only a year since U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers had been shot down over Russia). Gagarin called out: "Mother, where are you running? I am not a foreigner." Asked then if he had come from space, he replied, "As a matter of fact, I have!"

Colonel Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin was born of a peasant family in the village of Klushino, Smolensk region. His education was primarily in the vocations until he entered pilot training at Orenburg in 1957. He graduated with honors from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy in 1967.
Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was called "The Columbus of The Cosmos," an apt and well-deserved title. His epic 108 minute Earth orbital flight on April 12,1961, was far more than just a successful operational mission. It was man's first encounter with the nether regions of space and the beginning of man's journey to the stars. As pilot of the spaceship Vostok 1, he proved that man could endure the rigors of lift-off, re-entry, and weightlessness, and yet still perform the manual operations essential to spacecraft flight.
Gagarin was superbly prepared for his encounter with history, both physically and technologically. On the night before his flight while others paced and worried, "Cosmonaut One" slumbered. When asked how he could sleep so peacefully on the eve of the launching, Yuri answered, "Would it be right to take off if I were not rested? It was my duty to sleep so I slept." This is discipline and dedication at its best.
At the conclusion of his flight, he was subjected to the most intensive debriefing and scientific examination. It was found in spite of the difficult and strange weightless environment, his great skill permitted him to work and to record important data which his fellow astronauts and scientific collaborators would find vital to future space flights.
His impressions of space flight are filled with words of poetry - joy - beauty - black sky - bright stars - these are the universal words of the pilot who knows and loves the firmament. The light of the bright star of Yuri Gagarin was extinguished on March 27, 1968, when his aircraft crashed near Moscow.

On April 12, 1961, Yury Gagarin made history, by being the first human to orbit the earth. He wouldn't need any food for his single orbit trip, but scientists wanted to know if he could eat in the weightlessness of space.
As a precaution, engineers at the Soviet Academy of Sciences had an onboard computer, as well as mission control steer the craft, Vostok 1. They did this because the feared that being in the weightlessness of space, you might be disabled or not be able to move very much.
Before Gagarin climbed aboard the rocket, he made a speech. His speech said things such as how beautiful a moment this was, to go into space. How all he lived for (he previously was a Red Air Force Fighter pilot) and did was for this moment. He was glad to, "meet nature face to face, in an unprecedented encounter."
As Gagarin's rocket accelerated towards space, it reached a peak of 5 g's, meaning Gagarin felt five times heavier that his normal weight.
As Gagarin passed through the lower atmosphere, the nose pointed canopy separated, exposing the Voxtok 1 capsule, allowing Gagarin to see the dark blue sky turn into a black space as he was shot into orbit, around the earth. 14 minutes after liftoff, Gagarin reported," Separation from the carrier rocket completed." Gagarin tested his food and water samples. He reported no side effects to the weightlessness. As Gagarin passed over the Atlantic, he thought of his mother and how she would react to the news of the first space flight... especially since her son was the one up there flying it. She was unaware about Gagarin being involved in space exploration until the news broke.
At about 10:15 am, just after Gagarin started passing over Africa, the auto-pilot turned Vostok 1 around and fired the retro-rocket, which would take Vostok 1 out of orbit. This was a very suspenseful and nervous time for Yury Gagarin and mission control, for two out of the five test flights, the retro-rockets did not fire correctly and the flights ended in failure.
Luckily, this time, it worked correctly and Vostok 1 came out of orbit and was slowed down by 350 miles per hour. As the capsule came out of orbit, the equipment section was dropped, because it was no longer needed. Now all that was left of the 125 ft. rocket, launched just over an hour ago, was a 7 1/2 ft. diameter capsule. As it fell 17,000 mph. towards earth, Gagarin experienced 10 g's, and felt like a 1500 pound brick falling from the sky. Gagarin could now see flames on the outside as he went through the atmosphere.
On the outside, the heat was a 2000 degree Fahrenheit temperature. Inside, the capsule, it was a "mild" 68 degrees.
With a flight time of about 1 hour and 48 min., Gagarin landed safely in Siberia.
Years later, Gagarin was tragically killed in a test plane crash.

12 April 1961 - Vostok 1 Assignment: Prime Crew. Flight details: Vostok 1.
First manned spaceflight, one orbit of the earth. Three press releases were prepared, one for success, two for failures. It was only known ten minutes after burnout, 25 minutes after launch, if a stable orbit had been achieved.
The payload included life-support equipment and radio and television to relay information on the condition of the pilot. The flight was automated; Gagarin's controls were locked to prevent him from taking control of the ship. The combination to unlock the controls was available in a sealed envelope in case it became necessary to take control in an emergency. After retrofire, the service module remained attached to the Sharik reentry sphere by a wire bundle. The joined craft went through wild gyrations at the beginning of re-entry, before the wires burned through. The Sharik, as it was designed to do, then naturally reached aerodynamic equilibrium with the heat shield positioned correctly.
Gagarin ejected after re-entry and descended under his own parachute, as was planned. However for many years the Soviet Union denied this, because the flight would not have been recognized for various FAI world records unless the pilot had accompanied his craft to a landing. Recovered April 12, 1961 8:05 GMT. Landed Southwest of Engels Smelovka, Saratov. Additional Details: Vostok 1 (68).

Exactly three months to the day after his flight in Vostok I had ushered in a new age of space exploration, the trim figure of Yuri Gagarin strode down the gangway of a British Viscount airliner and walked briskly out across the runway of Manchester airport towards a sea of expectant faces, and flashing camera bulbs. Heavy banks of cloud had obscured the aircraft's final descent, and a ferocious downpour had lashed the tarmac, soaking the top hats and tails of the waiting dignitaries. However, what the rain could not dampen was the warmth of Gagarin's smile and the raw enthusiasm of the crowds who thronged the concourse: pushing at the safety barriers and seizing every vantage point in an attempt to catch a glimpse of their hero.

Title
Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin
Full Description
Yuri Gagarin was born on March 9, 1934 in a town outside of Moscow, Russia. After graduating from secondary school in 1949, Gagarin went to several technical schools before joining the Orenburg Higher Air Force School in 1955. He began his cosmonaut training in 1960, along with 19 other candidates. On April 12, 1961 at 9:06 am Gagarin lifted off in the Vostok 1 spacecraft and after a 108-minute flight of extended microgravity, he parachuted safely to the ground in the Saratov region of the USSR. As the first human to fly in space, he successfully completed one orbit around the Earth. After his historic flight, Gagarin became an international symbol for the Soviet space program and in 1963 was appointed deputy director of the Cosmonaut Training Center. In 1966 he served as a backup crewmember for Soyuz 1 and on February 17, 1968, completed a graduate degree in technical sciences. Tragically, during flight training in a UTI-MiG-15 aircraft on March 27, 1968, Gagarin was killed when his plane crashed.
